With the increase in patients and technology, you just get busier and busier. An Electronic Health Record or EHR is a version of a patient’s charts that is completely digital. As a doctor, you need to focus on your management skills as well as your normal studies. Here are six tips to help you manage the EHRs.

The first thing to do when managing your Electronic Health Records is to implement your staff and office. Once learned the automation features of the EHRs will make life around the office easier when used to its full potential. You and your staff should learn how to use the EHRs before they go live at your office, that way the implementation will be much smoother.
The second thing to do is to stay patient focused. Do not keep your focus solely on your computer. Focusing on the patient and computer both take concentration. Be careful not to absentmindedly glance at the screen when nonrelevant information is mentioned. When meeting new patients it is important to make eye contact, listen, and take your fingers off of the keyboard.
The third thing to do is to encourage your patient to help build their charts. Before you start to write up the patient’s EHR, ask their permission. You can even show them the test results as you explain it to them. This can improve the patient-doctor relationship and grow trust.
The fourth thing to do when managing your Electronic Health Records is to enter information around your patient’s needs. Do not stop patient’s if you need to write something in their chart or look something up. Change your writing style to write in their concerns and relevant information.
The fifth thing goes along with the fourth. Improve your typing and computer skills. To do this make sure you and your office are familiar with the EHR system. Find short cuts to increase your screen-scanning speed.
The sixth tip is to use templates for documents. Once you are confident enough to use templates this can drastically reduce the time you send charting during a visit.

When it comes to ways to improve your Electronic Health Records in your office, there are many ways to do that. The main thing to remember is that they are there to make the office run smoother and help your patients better. They are not their instead of face to face with patients. Be sure to use the system to your benefit to show the patient the results instead of just telling them.
